When Microsoft launched OneDrive, it wanted to communicate how integrated cloud services would transform its standard-bearing office software suite. Knowing that “the Cloud” is an often-used, poorly understood piece of jargon, we set about making users feel the excitement of how their everyday work would become easier.

DESIGN NOTES
Professional documents are littered with grids. And as the Tate states, from Mondrian to Malevich, grids signify modernity. By using graph paper and origami, we emphasized the aesthetic elements of articles of work that we often underappreciate.
Given our particular expertise in vellum effects, we broke some of the rigidity of grids up with unexpected, tactile, flowing grids that emphasize novelty and flexibility. A feeling that OneDrive users might discover new aspects of their old documents.

PRODUCTION
One of the things that stood out about the process to the client was the speed of development. R&D concepts can take months to execute, especially with many elements in a scene. Because of our existing infrastructure for modeling vellum and precise, topologically real folding patterns, we made whole scenes of complex origami objects inside a week.
